Description Provenance Exhibitions Bibliography

Samuel Pozzi (1846-1918) was a famous surgeon and gynechologist, and doctor for the parisian bourgeosie. He was friend of Anatole France, Robert de Montesqiou and Marcel Proust. The latter inspired by the personality of his friend, based the character of Doctor Cottard’s in La Recherche du Temps Perdu. Pozzi played an important role in the aesthetic of parisian culture. In 1881, when Pozzi was still unknown to the general public, Singer Sargent dedicated him a portrait, depicting him as a renaissance prince. Inspired by this famous portrait, Troubetzkoy modelled the present life-size bust.
