Description Provenance Exhibitions Bibliography

The small plaster is a study for the 4th competition for the monument to Garibaldi in Milan. Even if the competition was won by Ettore Ximenes, the plaster was highly appreciated by critics, including Gustavo Macchi (1888) which stated that the simplicity with which Troubetzkoy sculpted his Garibaldi, placing him on a common horse, “was a logical reaction to the magniloquence of monumental art”. Giolli (1913) affirms that when Troubetzkoy participated at the 1892 competition in Naples, he modified the monument by adding on each side of the base of the monument a marble lion and wide bas-reliefs in bronze in order to balance the proportions of the monument.
