Description Provenance Exhibitions Bibliography

In 1892, Troubetzkoy in collaboration with Luigi Conconi (who designed the base of the present plaster), took part in the competition announced by the council of Turin for the building of a public monument in memory of Amedeo di Savoia, Duke of Aosta (Turin, 1845- 1890). The study, with the motto “Arte e Vita” (Art and Life) was presented in Turin and was positively acclaimed for its modernity by critics, together with that of Leonardo Bistolfi. The Concorso of 1892 stated that of the twenty nine studies of Turin’s competition, only that of Troubetzkoy was able to resemble “real life”. However, the opinion of Stella (1892b) prevailed, doubting the capabilities of Troubetzkoy for public monuments. According to Rebora (2017) the first competition was won by Ettore Ximenes, but due to lack of funds, this was never carried out. The second competition instead was won by Davide Calandra. Troubetzkoy reproposed the present plaster at the Triennale of Milan in 1894, together with the study for Garibaldi’s monument.
