Description Provenance Exhibitions Bibliography

The plaster depicts Carlo Cadorna (1809-91), politician, senator and eventually President of the Chamber of Deputies. He had been also prefect of Turin and ambassador in London for six years. After Cadorna’s death, Pallanza’s mayor Giuseppe Cavanna decided to open a contest for the building of a public monument honoring Cadorna. Troubetzkoy presented three sketches (n.51,52,53) with the slogan “Art is life”. Accoring to Donatella Gavrilovich (2017) the present plaster is number 53, as shown by a photograph of the 4th of January 1892 sent from Raffaella Cadorna to the organizers of the contest. Troubetzkoy won the contest and named the monument “The Beautiful Pallanza”. The bust of Cadorna was used for the medallion on the monument.
