Description Provenance Exhibitions Bibliography

Troubetzkoy met the famous Italian writer Gabriele D’Annunzio (Pescara, 1863- Gardone Riviera, 1938) in 1892. According to Rebora (2017) the young D’Annunzio was in Naples, hosted by Francesco Paolo Michetti, when he praised Troubetzkoy’s monument to Garibaldi on the newspaper Il Mattino. According to Giolli (1913) Troubetzkoy and D’Annunzio quickly became friends. Rebora (2017) reports that Troubetzkoy worked on the present plaster between the summer and autumn of 1892, as it was exposed for the first time beside the portrait of Francesco Crispi and exhibited at the Esposizione Annuale della Famiglia Artistica of that same year. Of the present bust, a bronze cast exists at the Vittoriale degli Italiani of Gardone Riviera. During Troubetzkoy’s Parisian years, a small full length and seated portrait of D’Annunzio were also carried out.
