The present portrait depicts Charles R. Crane (1858-1939), well-known American businessman, industrialist and diplomat with ties to Eastern Europe and the Middle East.

commissioned by Charles R. Crane (1858-1939) of Chicago, 1912;
passed by inheritance to his daughter Josephine Crane Bradley (1886-1952) of Madison;
passed by inheritance to Harold Cornelius Bradley (1878-1976);
passed by inheritance to Ruth A. Bradley of Berkeley, CA;
donated to the Elvhjem Art Center, now known as the Chazen Museum of Art (renamed in 2005).
