Portrait of Antonio Durini (Ritratto di Antonio Durini)

Antonio Durini(Milan 1853 – 1934) was a patron and amateur artist, exclusively dedicated to the animalier genre. The present portrait was exhibited by Troubetzkoy at the Famiglia Artistica Annual Exhibition of 1891, as witnessed by Ferdinando Fontana (1891), stating that the bust was to be considered a masterpiece and congratulating Durini for bringing this artwork into his home. The bust which had been modelled with “talent” (Alla Famiglia Artistica, 1891) by the young Troubetzkoy, marks an evolution the artist’s practice. Rebora (2017) states that at the end of the 19th century, Troubetzkoy started to experiment with larger masses of material in order to reach an anatomical truth, as for this portrait.
