Description Provenance Exhibitions Bibliography

In May 1896 Segantini met Troubetzkoy in Milan. Giolli(1913, p. 13) reports that Troubetzkoy intially attempted to portray Segatini as a nude bust, but the sculpture had never been completed. Only on the very last day of Segantini’s permanence in Milan, Troubetzkoy found the perfect pose for the sculpture, becoming one of his most admired works. After a few months, the portrait was presented to the public for the opening of an exhibition of Segantini in Berlin. The plaster model was kept by the descendants of Luigi Conconi. The present bronze, which is currently located at the Museo del Paesaggio used to belong to Alberto Grubicy. Another copy in bronze can be found at the Pinacoteca Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio of Tortona.
