The portrait depicts the spanish painter Pedro Gil, brother of the famous poet Rodolfo Gil. Great friends of Sorolla, both attended the Spanish Academy of the Beaux Arts and travelled to Paris for the first time. Pedro Gil had been depicted by Troubetzkoy twice: in this first portrait, dated 1905, in a relaxed pose, the second one in plaster with green patina, which had been donated by Gil at the Sorolla Museum in which he is seated. The present plaster had also been illustrated in a an article of M. Guillermot in Art decoratif of 1908 (Frezzotti, 2017).
