Paul Cesar Helleu (1859-1927) was a painter, writer, engraver, caricaturist and illustrator. He became close to painters such as Sargent and Whistler and Giovanni Boldini, which undoubtedly influenced his painting style. Through Montesqiou, he met Marcel Proust, which in his Recherche du Temps Perdu used Helleu as inspiration for Elstir’s character. John Grioni (op. cit. 1985, p. 206)dates the present sculpture at 1908.
