Description Provenance Exhibitions Bibliography

Gertrude Vanderbilt was the daughter of financer Cornelius II Vanderbilt.  Her biggest contribution was the promotion of contemporary art, financing the society for independent artists, the Art Magazine and contributing to the financing of The Armory Show. In 1929, she offered her collection of roughly 500 works of art to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, but the donation was denied. Subsequently, Mrs Whitney established the Whitney Museum, constructed by Marcel Breuer, and becoming one of the most relevant museums for American Contemporary Art (Frezzotti, 2017).
