Description Provenance Exhibitions Bibliography

The present portrait, exhibited at the first Venice Biennale of 1895, depicts painter Lazzaro Pasini (Reggio Emilia 1861-Milano 1949). In the present sculpture, he holds his daughter Dina. The art critic Virgilio Colombo (1895) states that Troubetzkoy was looking for new subjects for his sculptures. Pasini (with his daughter) met with Troubetzkoy to discuss a new painting, and when Pasini picked the child to make her stop crying, Troubetzkoy started modelling the group in clay. Rebora (2017) reports that the affinities in style with Rodin and the choice of such an intimate theme, helped the sculpture reach success from the public in Venice and many art critics, helping Troubetzkoy establish himself as an international artist.
